Where First Turns Become Lifelong Love for the Snow

Everybody remembers their first run. At Little Switzerland, Crystal Ridge, and Nordic Mountain, we've built our hills around making that first run a great one. As a family of Wisconsin ski areas under Schmitz Brothers Resorts, we specialize in something most mountains treat as an afterthought: turning nervous beginners into confident skiers and riders, one welcoming hill at a time.

Whether you're strapping on skis for the very first time, bringing your kids out for their first season, or looking for a home mountain the whole family can grow into, you'll find it at one of our three hills.

Terrain Based Learning: The Easiest & Safest Way to Learn

Learning to ski or snowboard shouldn't be intimidating  and at our locations, it isn't. All three of our hills use Terrain Based Learning™ (TBL), an award-winning teaching method that's changed the way the world learns to slide on snow.

Instead of relying on ropes, poles, or hours of trial and error, TBL uses specially shaped snow features — rollers, banked turns, and gently sloped terrain — to naturally guide new skiers and riders into good habits from their first steps on snow. The terrain does the work of controlling speed and balance, so beginners can skip the fear and focus on the fun!

Learn more

Every TBL lesson moves guests through a simple, five-step progression:

  1. The Flats – Get comfortable with your equipment and basic movements.
  2. Mini-Pipe – Feel what it's like to slide on snow for the first time.
  3. Rollers – Build confidence as gently rolling terrain controls your speed.
  4. Banked Turns – Make your first real turns, guided naturally by the terrain.
  5. The Perfect Slope – Put it all together and ski or ride on your own.

By the end of one session, most first-timers are making their own turns — no white-knuckle grip, no tears, just genuine progress. It's why families keep coming back to Little Switzerland, Crystal Ridge, and Nordic Mountain year after year, and why so many lifelong skiers and riders got their start on one of our hills.

Three Hills, Three Personalities, & One Mission

Little Switzerland, Crystal Ridge, and Nordic Mountain are independently owned by Schmitz Brothers Resorts, and each one brings its own flavor of fun to the family.

Little Switzerland is where the party doesn't stop when the lifts do. Between terrain parks for progressing riders and an après-ski scene with a chalet bar, restaurant, and events all season long, it's the hill families come back to for the full day (and night) out.

Crystal Ridge is Milwaukee's own backyard hill — urban skiing at its best, with terrain parks that keep riders of every level entertained run after run. Close, easy, and always a good time.

Nordic Mountain is the family adventure worth the drive. With a dedicated beginner area built for first-timers and a laid-back, just-us vibe, it's the perfect destination day trip — pair it with a nearby stay and make a weekend of it.

Three hills, three personalities — but the same commitment runs through all of them: making it easy, affordable, and fun for new skiers and riders, and the families who bring them, to fall in love with snow sports. Wherever you land, you'll find the same friendly instructors, the same proven Terrain Based Learning method, and the same family-first spirit that's made us Wisconsin's go-to resorts for beginners.
